About

Hello, my name is Leanne, and I write poems.

I started performing my poetry around seven years ago, and since then I've worked alongside some amazing creative talent including the likes of John Hegley, Mark Grist, Hollie McNish, Ross Sutherland, Kate Tempest, Steve Larkin, Fay Roberts, Richard Tyrone Jones, Attila the Stockbroker, and Mark Neil. I've performed all over the UK and been published in some really cool poetry magazines, projects and anthologies.

I also take part in a lot of slam competitions, and in the past I've placed second in the National Poetry Rivals competition, reached the semi-finals of the Camden Roundhouse Poetry Slam, and won the Cambridge Regional Hammer and Tongue Slam. I also came second in the 2015 National 'Anti-Slam' (a competition to see who can write the worst poem ever) and placed in the top five at the Superheroes of Slam regional heat in Leicester.

In 2013, I won the Fenland Poet Laureate competition. You can read all about my year as Fenland Poet Laureate here

During the summer months, you'll find me hanging out at festivals all over the UK. Over the past few years I've performed on stage at loads of events including Bestival, the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, the Festival of Ideas at Cambridge University, Folk East, Nottigham Poetry Festival, the Peterborough Arts Festival, the Beverley Folk Festival and Camp Bestival.

I also do a lot of work on collaborative projects. In January 2013 I was selected by a panel of spoken word promoters to take part in the Next Steps Live Literature Residency, which was hosted by Writers' Centre Norwich and funded by the Arts Council. Then, in July 2014 I spent a week working with artist Fran Crowe as the Writer in Residence on the Museum of Beyond project. This year, I'm working with Writing East Midlands as Shadow Writer in Residence for the Write Here: Sanctuary project, an initiative that seeks to support refugees, asylum seekers and migrant workers through creative writing opportunities and workshops.

When I'm not performing I really love working with talented, creative people to help raise the profile of poetry in the UK. I'm a founding member of the 28 Sonnets Later writers' collective, and I co-founded the Fen Speak Poetry Open Mic Nights with the very lovely Elaine Ewart. I'm also a member of the DIY Poets, a performance collective based in Nottingham. I currently host the Crosswords Spoken Word Open Mic nights in Nottingham's spookiest subterranean venue (you can read all about them here) and I run creative writing workshops for schools, libraries, museums, and community groups, helping others to discover poetry and enjoy writing!
